The Boston Celtics had the best record in the NBA during the 2007-2008 NBA regular season, and while they may have had some tentative moments during the 2008 NBA Playoffs, they did manage to reach the NBA Finals and win theirs first NBA Championship in over two decades against the Los Angeles Lakers, closing out the best-of-seven NBA Finals series 4-2.
What makes the victory sweet is that the Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA Championship against their West Coast arch rivals the Los Angeles Lakers, whom they have met in the NBA finals several times throughout NBA history. Of course, the Boston Celtics earned their 2008 NBA Championship because of a solid squad that featured the likes of Kevin Garnett, NBA Finals MVP Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Rajon Rondo and the rest of the Celtics.
Now the big question is - Is this just a one-time thing, or is this the beginning of another NBA Dynasty? During the last championship of the Boston Celtics back in 1986, Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and company were as solid a team as you could ever get, and their success in the NBA included several appearances in the NBA Finals plus a couple of NBA Championships to boot. Can Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and company do the same thing again in the 2008-2009 NBA season? Or is this NBA Championship just one last milestone before talks of retirement begin?
Certainly, the Boston Celtics might have to give up 38-year olds PJ Brown and Sam Cassell, whose aging knees might not even last up to the end of the regular season. That’ll mean, a change in the roster which could either be an improvement, or a huge adjustment that’ll might make things difficult for the Boston Celtics. After all, despite the age of PJ Brown and Sam Cassell, they still do have so much valuable NBA experience to bring to the team.
As for the likes of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen - well, you’ve got one NBA ring, are you good enough to get another one?
Hopefully, we’ll see the Boston Celtics in the 2009 NBA Finals.
