English Premier League champions Manchester United have won the UEFA Champions League title after defeating Chelsea FC in penalty kicks.
Cristiano Ronaldo of Manchester United opened the scoring in the 26th minute with a brilliant header, but Chelsea’s Frank Lampard was able to equalise on the stroke of half time. The scoreline ended with 1-1 at the end of regulation and the UEFA Champions League final match went into extra time.
During extra time, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba was given a red card after he tapped the face of Nemanja Vidic of Manchester Unite. Manchester United failed to capitalize on the one-man advantage, and the match went into a penalty shootout.
Manchester United’s star midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo missed his penalty opportunity, and gave Chelsea the advantage going into the 5th penalty kick, but Chelsea captain John Terry failed to make his goal even as he sent Manchester Untied keeper Edwin Van Der Sar the wrong way. Eventually, it was Edwin Van Der Sar who was the hero for Manchester United after he stopped the attempt of Nicolas Anelka.
Manchester United were successful in winning the English Premier League title just a few weeks back despite a valiant effort from Chelsea to bridge the gap and make it a tight race for the Premiership title. Chelsea had the opportunity to win the UEFA Champions League title from Manchester United for a sweet revenge, but eventually the result favored Manchester United, who have had a glorious season of football by winning both the English Premier League and the UEFA Champions League.
Manchester United will be determined to defend their UEFA Champions League title during the upcoming 2008-2009 UEFA Champions League season.
Among those expected to participate in the 2008-09 UEFA Champions League tournament are Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal of the English Premier League, Real Madrid and Barcelona FC of the Spanish Premier League, and Inter Milan and AS Roma of the Italian Serie A among others.
If Manchester United can keep up their championship form, Manchester United will certainly be among the favorites to win the UEFA Champions League title again in 2009.

Manchester United grabbed a 2-0 victory against Wigan Athletic to secure 3 more points to finally win the English Premier League title for the 2nd season in a row, their 10th Premier League title.
Chelsea was hoping to win against Bolton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge in order to have a chance at winning the English Premier League title, but a 1-1 draw left Chelsea short on the points to catch up with Manchester United.
In any case, Manchester United are the English Premier League champions! Congratulations to Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, Edwin van der Sar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and the rest of Manchester United!
However, the rivalry of Manchester United and Chelsea still has another chapter as the two will be facing each other in the UEFA Champions League finals to be held in Moscow on May 22.

Two English Premier League clubs -
Manchester United and
Chelsea - are going to be facing each other in the
UEFA Champions League Finals this coming May at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow.
Manchester United were able to get through the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League, beating Spanish La Liga club Barcelona FC by a score of 1-0 aggregate with the lone goal of both semi-final legs coming from Paul Scholes of Manchester United.
Chelsea meanwhile had a more exciting semi-final match against Liverpool with the final score going 4-3 on aggregate, and 3-2 on the second leg of the semifinals played at Chelsea’s home pitch on Stamford Bridge. 2 goals by Didier Drogba and a penalty by Frank Lampard assured the victory for Chelsea despite the goals by Fernando Torres and Ryan Babel for Liverpool.
The last time Chelsea faced Manchester United was just last week for an English Premier League fixture. Chelsea came out victorious at Stamford Bridge, but that time Manchester United saw its stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez on the bench.
Apart from the quest to win the UEFA Champions League title, Chelsea and Manchester United are also chasing for the English Premier League Championship. In fact, both Chelsea and Manchester United are tied at the top of the English Premier League standings with 81 points, and just a few fixtures remaining in the season.

English Premier League clubs Chelsea and Liverpool are no strangers to one another. In fact, the Chelsea vs Liverpool rivalry is an age-old rivalry that goes on in the English Premier League. Every single time - it’s the Reds vs Blues! But then, this is not an English Premier League match, it is the UEFA Champions League semi-finals.
Chelsea may seem the stronger side over Liverpool, enjoying a better position in the standings in the English Premier League. Actually, Chelsea sits at the No. 2 spot in the English Premier League behind Manchester United. Liverpool, meanwhile, may not be as successful as Chelsea in the English Premier League, but there is no denying that their success in the UEFA Champions League can actually see them through to the UEFA Champions League finals to be played in Moscow.
Liverpool may have the early advantage over Chelsea, considering that Liverpool will have the home pitch advantage at Anfield. But then, Chelsea isn’t that unfamiliar with matches at Anfield, and are very capable of pulling off an upset at Anfield with the likes of Frank Lampard, Michael Ballack and Didier Drogba in the line up.
However, Liverpool have the services of UEFA Champions League top scorers Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres to deliver a victory for Liverpool over Chelsea.
