For two consecutive seasons,
Manchester United have been champions of the English Premier League, and have won the Premiership title for a total of 17 times, just one shy of the record held by
Liverpool FC, who have a total of 18 titles.
Manchester United’s claimed the English Premier League championship with a tight race against Chelsea FC, and needed to make good at the last 90 minutes of the season. Chelsea FC closed in on Manchester United in the points race, but failed to make the last game count in order to regain the English Premier League title, which they held at the 2004 to 2005 and 2005 to 2006 seasons.
Last season was also very memorable for Manchester United, who also won the UEFA Champions League title, once again overcoming English Premier League rivals Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League finals held at the Luzinski Stadium in Moscow, Russia.
Of course, Manchester United, under the leadership of Sir Alex Ferguson, are still hoping to continue their streak and grab a three-peat in the English Premier League in the upcoming 2008-2009 season.
The Manchester United squad will still have some of its key players, such as Nani, Wayne Rooney, Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand, Carlos Tevez and Paul Scholes. However, Manchester United might not have the services of last season’s league top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo as he might be transferred to Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid.
Of course, Chelsea will be out to dethrone Manchester United as well as the likes of Liverpool FC and Arsenal.
Meanwhile, oddsmakers have picked Manchester United as the favorites to be outright winners of the English Premier League 2008-2009 season.
On the first week of the English Premier League, Manchester United will have a home match at Old Trafford against Newcastle United. Other matches on the first week apart from Manchester United vs Newcastle United include : Arsenal vs West Brom, Bolton Wanderers vs Stoke, Everton vs Blackburn Rovers, Hull City vs Fulham, Middlesbrough vs Tottenham Hotspurs, West Ham vs Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa vs Manchester City, Sunderland vs Liverpool and Chelsea vs Portsmouth.

Manchester United grabbed a 2-0 victory against Wigan Athletic to secure 3 more points to finally win the English Premier League title for the 2nd season in a row, their 10th Premier League title.
Chelsea was hoping to win against Bolton Wanderers at Stamford Bridge in order to have a chance at winning the English Premier League title, but a 1-1 draw left Chelsea short on the points to catch up with Manchester United.
In any case, Manchester United are the English Premier League champions! Congratulations to Sir Alex Ferguson, Ryan Giggs, Edwin van der Sar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Paul Scholes and the rest of Manchester United!
However, the rivalry of Manchester United and Chelsea still has another chapter as the two will be facing each other in the UEFA Champions League finals to be held in Moscow on May 22.

Michael Ballack of Chelsea FC opened the scoring with a magnificent header from a Didier Drogba cross, and Chelsea ended the first half up 1-0 at Stamford Bridge. In the second half, a mistake in the Chelsea defense found Manhcester United’s Wayne Rooney with some space to burst into the Chelsea goal and tie the game at 1-1. Eventually, it was Michael Ballack who was able to score from a penalty kick late in the game for Chelsea to win by a score of 2-1.
Chelsea share the top of the leaderboard with Manchester United both with 81 points. However, the goal difference goes the way of Manchester United. With only 2 fixtures left in the English Premier League, the fight for the points will certainly be a tight contest.
Manchester United will hope to improve their point standings with upcoming English Premier League matches against West Ham United on May 3 at Old Trafford and against Wigan Athletic on May 11 at the Wigan Athletic home pitch.
Meanwhile, Chelsea hope to overtake Manchester United with successful matches against Newcastle United on May 5 at the Newcastle United home pitch, and then at home at Stamford Bridge against Bolton Wanderers on May 11.

English Premier League champions
Manchester United look to be on target for another English Premier League title as they lead the English Premier League standings with 81 points.
Chelsea FC, however, are hot on the heels of Manchester United at the 2nd spot with 78 points, just three points shy of the top of the leaderboard.
This week’s coming fixture will feature Manchester United vs Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea hopes to make use of the home pitch advantage to defeat Manchester United and catchup with the English Premier League leaders.
A lot is at stake on the upcoming Manchester United vs Chelsea match, and in fact, the Manchester United vs Chelsea match might even be a preview of the upcoming UEFA Champions League finals to be held in Moscow at the end of May 2008. Of course, Manchester United and Chelsea still have to get through the UEFA Champions League semifinals. Manchester United will be facing Barcelona for a spot in the UEFA Champions League finals, and Chelsea will have to overcome Liverpool for a trip to the UEFA Champions League finals.
But first things first, and that is the race for the English Premier League title.

Defending English Premier League champions Manchester United are on their way to another English Premier League title after a 2-1 victory at Old Trafford against Arsenal. Arsenal were on the top of the English Premier League standings throughout much of the 2007-08 English Premier League season, and were neck-and-neck going up against Manchester United in the race for the English Premier Leagues championship. However, in the past few weeks, Manchester United have step up their football to gain more points while Arsenal have had a lackluster performance.
The 2-1 victory of Manchester United give them a total of 80 points in the standings. In second place is Chelsea with 75 points while Arsenal are down at 3rd with 71 points. The loss of Arsenal has prompted Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to wave the white flag in surrender, giving up any hope for their English Premier League title campaign.
With just 4 league matches remaining in the season, Manchester United look to be on track to repeat as English Premier League champions. Unless, of course, Chelsea might be able to impose a challenge and close the gap in the next matches.
Chelsea and Manchester United will still face each other on April 26 at Stamford Bridge, and that match will prove to be critical in deciding who will be champions of the English Premiere League!

Manchester United vs Liverpool at Old Trafford. Let’s wager on Manchester United to win against Liverpool.
Why? Old Trafford. Cristiano Ronaldo. Carlos Tevez. Wayne Rooney. Top of the leaderboard at the English Premier League Standings. Defending English Premier League Champions. Manchester United.
Liverpool FC, however, are no slouch overs. Fernando Torres. Steven Gerrard. Javier Mascherano. And they also have a few extras days more rest as Manchester United will still have to contend with Bolton Wanderers tonight, and they might be a bit tired and beaten up from that match to go up against a fresh Liverpool squad. Well, maybe.
However, Manchester United has won 12 of their 14 home games, drew once and lost once. The odds definitely favor Manchester United with those stats. And Liverpool’s away statistics aren’t the best either, winning only 7 of 14 when away.
