Venus Williams defeated her sister
Serena Williams 7-5, 6-4, and earns the title of 2008 Wimbledon champion of the Ladies’ Singles tournament. It is the 5th Wimbledon title of Venus Williams, and the first that she won against her sister Serena Williams. In the two previous Wimbledon ladies’ singles finals between Serena Williams and Venus Williams, it had been Serena Williams who won. However, this time, Venus Williams seemed to be the better player, and was able to take dominate the game to earn the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies’ singles championship.
Serena Williams did earn herself a Wimbledon in the Ladies’ Doubles, who teamed up with sister Venus Williams to defeat Lisa Raymond and Samantha Stosur in the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies’ Doubles Finals.
Meanwhile, Venus Williams has set her goal to win the 2008 US Open Championship. Venus Williams has won the US Open twice in her career, and she will be looking for a 3rd title this coming September when the US Open is held at Flushing, New York. Defending champions Justine Henin of Belgium won’t be there to defend her title after announcing her retirement earlier this season. Other favorites expected to do well at the 2008 US Open include two-time US Open champion Serena Williams, former US Open champion and last year’s US Open finalist Svetlana Kuzentsova and former US Open champion Maria Sharapova.

Roger Federer of Swtizerland, the current World No. 1 tennis player and the top-seed of the
2008 Wimbledon Mens’ Singles Finals tournament, will be looking to advance to the finals if he defeats Marat Safin of Russia in the 2008 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Semifinals. The unseeded
Marat Safin has had an incredible run in the 2008 Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament, but faces a very heavy favorite in the likes of Roger Federer, who hopes to win the tournament for a sixth consecutive time since his first Wimbledon championship in 2003.
Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal of Spain, the No. 2 seed of the tournament, will be hoping to advance to the finals with a win against the unseeded Rainer Schuettler of Germany in the 2008 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Semifinals. Rainer Schuettler earned a spot in the finals after a gruelling 5-set marathon quarterfinal match against Arnaud Clement, and hopefully Rainer Schuettler still has some tennis left in him to go up against Rafael Nadal, who has breezed through the competition so far.
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have met at the Wimbledon Finals for the past 2 years, and Roger Federer has been the champion each time. However, Rafael Nadal may have the mental edge over Roger Federer, considering that Rafael Nadal beat Roger Federer in their recent meeting at the finals of the 2008 French Open.
Of course, grass is a different surface than clay, and it seems that while Rafael Nadal may be king of the clay courts, it is Roger Federer who is the king of the grass courts. But then, of course, we will just have to wait until the semifinals are over to actually see if Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal make it through to the 2008 Wimbledon Gentlemen’s Singles Finals.

It’s Serena Williams vs Venus Williams for the third time in the finals of the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles tournament.
Venus Williams is the current Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Champion, winning it last year over Marion Bartoli. Venus Williams has also been crowned Wimbledon Champion 4 times since she won it the first time in the year 2000.
Serena Williams has won the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Championship twice in 2002 and 2003, and both those times Serena Williams beat her sister Venus Williams to claim the championship.
Historically, Venus Williams has not won against Serena Williams in their two meetings at the Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Finals. That reason alone makes Serena Williams the heavy favorite to win against Venus Williams during their championship match on Saturday, July 5, 2008.
Serena Williams deafeated Jie Zheng 6-2, 7-6 during the semifinals while Venus Williams defeated No. 5 seed Elenna Dementieva 6-1, 7-6 to earn a spot in the finals.

On Saturday July 5, 2008, Zheng Jie of China will be turning 25, and it looks like she will be having quite a memorable birthday as she hopes to defeat No. 6 seed Serena Williams of the USA in the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Semi-finals to earn a spot in the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles Finals against either No. 7 seed Venus Williams or No. 5 seed Elena Dementieva.
Zheng Jie, the tiny woman from the earthquake-devastated Chinese city of Chengdu, has produced the most romantic story of Wimbledon. Zheng Jie arrived with Yan Zi, her doubles partner, to sharpen up before the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August and got into the ladies’ singles tournament on a wild card.
While Zheng Jie and Yan Zi were knocked out of the 2008 Wimbledon women’s doubles tournament in the third round, Zheng Jie still continues her Wimbledon journey, making it all the way to the semifinals in a very fascinating journey. On her way to the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies’ Singles semifinals, Zheng Jie knocked out the likes of World No. 1 and top seed Ana Ivanovic in the third round, and then knocking out Nicole Vaidisova of the Czech Republic in the quarterfinals in order to face Serena Williams in the semifinals.
Zheng Jie is the first Chinese player to reach the semi-finals of a grand-slam tournament and a win against Serena Williams would take her to the dream of a Wimbledon final on her 25th birthday on Saturday. Whatever the outcome may be, Zheng Jie has already promised her prize-money to the 70,000 victims of the earthquakes that wrecked Sichuan province in China last May 2008.
Perhaps Zheng Jie’s good intentions will result in good karma, and indeed a memorable win in the semifinals against Serena Williams. And then for the finals, Zheng Jie will be riding on the fortune of celebrating her birthday, and certainly the stars look to be properly aligned for that.

Maria Sharapova, the No. 3 seed of the 2008 Wimbledon Ladies’ singles tournament, and World No. 1 and top-seed
Ana Ivanovic were expected to be the top performers at Wimbledon, and oddsmakers expected that Maria Sharapova and Ana Ivanovic would be meeting in the Wimbledon ladies’ singles finals just as they did during the 2008 Australian Open.
However, Maria Sharapova suffered an early exit in the 2nd round of the tournament, losing out to fellow Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-2, 6-4 to end her bid for her 2nd grand slam tournament this year.
Ana Ivanovic was able to escape a 2nd round exit by the skin of her teeth, but eventually fell on the third round to Jie Zheng of China, who defeated Ana Ivanovic 6-1, 6-4.
With Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova out of the tournament, oddsmakers are expecting that No. 2 seed Jelena Jankovic of Serbia will go on to win the 2008 Wimbeldon Ladies’ Singles championship.

When
Nathalie Denchy of France last played
Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, the score was a dominating 6-1, 6-1 in favor of Ana Ivanovic.
In the second round of the 2008 Wimbledon tennis tournament in Wimbledon, England, many thought that would be the same case. However, an inspired Nathalie Denchy managed to keep things close with world no. 1 and Wimbledon top-seed Ana Ivanovic. How close?
Well, Nathalie Denchy managed to win the first set via a tiebreaker 7-6, then had two match points to close the deal on Ana Ivanovic during the second set, and it almost seemed that way when Ana Ivanovic struck the net during Nathalie Denchy’s match point, but the ball somehow managed to cross to the other side of the net and Ana Ivanovic won the point. That would’ve been the turning point as Ana Ivanovic went on to win the set via a tiebreak 7-6.
The third set was awesome inspired tennis between Ana Ivanovic and Nathalie Denchy, but eventually it was Nathalie Denchy who gave way with Ana Ivanovic winning the set and match 10-8.
Indeed, it was a very shaky start for Wimbledon top-seed and World No. 1 Ana Ivanovic, but Ivanovic maintained her composure and played the tennis that truly makes her the world number one. As for Nathalie Denchy, it may have been a very unfortunate loss, but still it was a very memorable and well-played match, probably even played better than most Wimbledon women’s finals.
In any case, Ana Ivanovic is through to the next round, and hopefully some more consistency will earn her a trip to the Wimbledon women’s singles finals, and perhaps the 2008 Wimbledon Women’s singles championship.

Ana Ivanovic of Serbia is now the World No. 1 ranked woman in tennis. Maria Sharapova of Russia relinquished the No. 1 spot with a poor performance in the 2008 French Open while Ana Ivanovic performed some of her best tennis in order to win the 2008 French Open Women’s Singles Championship and rise to the rank of World No. 1.
Of course, along with the privilege of being named as the World No. 1 in women’s tennis, Ana Ivanovic now becomes the top seed to win the Wimbledon 2008. Oddsmakers are expecting Maria Sharapova to bounce back to win the 2008 Wimbledon Women’s Singles Championship, but then so are other tennis players who have been making the women’s singles tournaments very competitive and exciting.
Among the other women’s singles tennis players expecting to perform well at the 2008 Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Tournament are Serena Williams, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Dinara Safina and Jelena Jankovic among other.
