Novak Djokovic becomes first Serbian in tennis history to win a Grand Slam title by winning 2008 Australian Open.
Unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France was the crowd favorite to make history in the Finals of the 2008 Australian Open. Certainly, it is a rare occurrence for an unseeded tennis player to win a Grand Slam title.
However, Novak Djokovic, the 3rd seed from Serbia, disappointed the tennis fans at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne, Australia, as he defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (7-2).
The first set of the 2008 Australian Open Men’s Singles Finals went to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, but Novak Djokovic gathered himself and won the next 2 sets. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made a match of it in the fourth set, but costly double faults during the tie-break gave game, set and match to Novak Djokovic, who made his own tennis history bybeing the first Serbian tennis player to win a Grand Slam title, and to win an Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic had an impressive tournament, including an awesome performance against World No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland in the semi-finals. It’s the 2008 Australian Open Finals! Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. Novak Djokovic. France vs. Serbia. Unseeded vs. No. 3. The Slayer of World No. 2 vs. The Executioner of World No. 1.
The pictures on this blog may look like it’s a boxing match, but trust us, this is tennis. This is 2008 Australian Open Men’s Singles, and this is The Finals!
The unseeded Jo-Wilfriend Tsonga of France will try to write something memorable for tennis history as he hopes to become one of the rare unseeded tennis players who wins a Tennis Grand-Slam Tournament should he win the finals of the 2008 Australian Open Men’s Singles. It’s something that definitely hasn’t happened in a long time, and Tsonga could be in for a lot of headlines and, of course, history. But first things first. Tsonga has to get past No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia, and that is not an easy task.
Novak Djokovic just came from an execution of World No. 1 Roger Federer of Switzerland in the semi-finals, defeating Federer in straight sets 7-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Djokovic just beat up the top gun, and let’s not forget that he is the 3rd seed of the tournament.
However, fans are rooting for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to fulfill his fairy-tale adventure of a ride that just kept getting better and better in every stage of the Men’s Singles tournament of the 2008 Australian Open. Of course, that run was recently highlighted by a total domination over World No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain. Definitely, an unseeded beating the World No. 2 in Men’s Tennis is quite a great feat, but dominating Nadal in the semi-finals 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 is just extraordinary.
Novak Djokovic is a favorite by odds-makers to win the 2008 Australian Open Men’s Singles title. But then, a bet on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga as an underdog to win the 2008 Australian Open Men’s Singles championship can pay a handsome amount.

Definitely, the finals of the 2008 Australian Open will feature the two hottest women in tennis. Hot - not only because they look great, but hot because they are indeed on a great streak of tennis for them to be in the finals.
Odds makers are favoring Maria Sharapova to win, just because she’s shown more consistency throughout the tournament while Ana Ivanovic almost slipped up her semi-final match against Daniela Hantuchova by giving up the first set 6-0, and giving up the first 8 games of the semi-final match. However, Ana Ivanovic bounced back and maintained her focus to beat Daniela Hantuchova to make it to the finals.
Maria Sharapova, meanwhile, has been on a dream start to 2008 with a trip to the finals of the 2008 Australian Open, having defeated World No. 1 Justine Henin of Belgium along the way as well as No. 3 seed Jelena Jankovic in the semi-finals.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Shocks World No. 2 Rafael Nadal
The unseeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France was a long shot to win the semi-final match against No. 2 seed and World No. 2 Rafael Nadal of Spain. Sure, Tsonga was able to get through his fellow Frenchman No. 8 seed Richard Gasquet, then he breezed through the No. 14 seeded Russian Mikhail Youzhny in the quarter-finals. But then, to oust the World No. 2 Rafael Nadal in straight sets 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 is just a remarkable feat for Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
After all, prior to the semi-final match against Tsonga, Rafael Nadal hadn’t dropped a single set throughout the entire 2008 Australian Open competition. An inspired Jo-Wilfried Tsonga brought his A-game and dominated Rafael Nadal from start to finish, breaking Nadal’s serve in the first game and doing it again and again.
What’s remarkable about Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s win is that apart from being unseeded going into the 2008 Australian Open, Tsonga hasn’t ever won a major tournament. In fact, Tsonga was a nobody. But now, after defeating Rafael Nadal in straight sets, even a feat that World No. 1 Roger Federer has a tough task accomplishing, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is proving to be a tennis player to be reckoned with in the ATP Tennis Tour.
Certainly, the world will be watching when Tsonga competes in the 2008 Australian Open Men’s Singles Finals. And certainly, odds makers will make the necessary changes in future tennis tournaments, and maybe the next time, Tsonga will be a top-seed, or even a probable World No. 1 in the future.
In the meantime, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga awaits the results of the semi-final match between No. 1 seed Roger Federer of Switzerland and No. 3 seed Novak Djokovic of Serbia.
