Australian Golfer Stuard Appleby has pulled off a big upset at the 2008 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Tucson, Arizona, by beating No. 2 seed Phil Mickelson of the United States.
Stuart Appleby produced a magnificent performance, reeling off nine birdies to beat Phil Mickelson.
“It was really good quality golf. The bottom line is I’m advancing. I don’t get an extra pay cheque or bonus for beating Phil,” said Appleby, who won 2 and 1 on a chilly day at Dove Mountain.
Appleby is one of three Australians through to the final 16 at the World Golf Championships event, joining Rod Pampling and Arron Baddeley.
Pampling beat compatriot Nick O’Hern 5 and 4, while Baddeley advanced without hitting a shot when his opponent David Toms withdrew with a back injury.
Baddeley’s reward is a third round match against top seed Tiger Woods, who saw off fellow American Aaron Oberholser in the second round of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships.

The 2nd tournament of the
2008 PGA Tour just concluded with the
2008 Sony Open in Hawaii, held at the Waialae Country Club in Honolulu. South Korean PGA Tour golfer
K.J. Choi won the 2008 Sony Open in Hawaii, leading the tournament from the first round all the way until the fourth and final round.
However, if was very difficult for K.J. Choi to seal the deal in the fourth round as the blustery weather conditions took a toll on the golfers. In fact, K.J. Choi shot a final round of 1-over-par 71, the first Sony Open champion in 41 years to shoot a final round over par.
Australian golfer Tim Wilkinson started the day in second place, but shot a very dismal 8-0ver in the final round to send him way down to the 25th spot. The closes competitor to chase K.J. Choi was South African golfer Rory Sabbatini, who shot a 2-under to improve his place in the leaderboard from 5th to second. Of course, Rory Sabbatini’s charge wasn’t enough to reach K.J. Choi who finished the tournament 3 strokes ahead of Rory Sabbatini.
K.J. Choi’s win at the 2008 Sony Open in Hawaii marks the fourth straight year he’s had a PGA Tour victory. This feat puts K.J. Choi in elite company, joining Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh with active streaks that long. K.J. Choi’s win also earns him $954,000 of a total $5.3 million purse. K.J. Choi also earns 25,000 FedEx Cup points.
Incidentally, American Jerry Kelly finished in 3rd spot, jumping up from the 14th spot after shooting a final round of 3-under. A four-way tie for fourth place goes to American golfers Steve Stricker, Pat Perez, Steve Marino and Kevin Na.
The next tournament in the 2008 PGA Tour is the 2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic at The Classic Club, Palm Desert, California on January 16 to January 20. Charley Hoffman is the defending champion.
PGA Tour odds for the 2008 Bob Hope Chrysler Classic will be available soon at the Bodog sportsbook.

The
2008 Mercedes-Benz Championship at the Plantation Course in Kapalua, Maui, Hawaii, is the first tournament of the 2008 PGA Tour. A lot of familiar golfing names were present at this opening tournament of the 2008 PGA Tour, but one of the biggest names of golf was absent.
2007 PGA Tour Player of the Year Tiger Woods did not participate in the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Championship at Kapalua, opting probably to extend his holiday season catching the action of the 2008 NFL playoffs.
However, other big names like Steve Stricker, Stephen Ames, Vijay Singh and Mike Weir were on-hand to compete in the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Cahmpionship that offered a purse of $5.5 million to kick off the 2008 PGA Tour.
Kicking off in January 3 and wrapping up on January 6, the Mercedes-Benz Championship tournament would play 72 holes of golf. After 3 rounds, it was Canadian Mike Weir who was a the top of the leaderboard, but then there were 12 other golfers who were within 4 strokes of the lead, and definitely within striking distance to overtake Mike Weir in the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Championship.
In fact, the final round of golf in the Mercedes-Benz Championship found American Steve Stricker fire a 9-under to jump from 6th place to first place tied with Sweden’s Daniel Chopra who fired a 7-under to jump from 3rd to first with a total score of 274. Canadian Stephen Ames was just one shot shy of making it a three-way tie at first place, and Mike Weir’s final round score of -3 wasn’t enough to give him a shot at a playoff round with Steve Stricker and Daniel Chopra.
American Nick Watney, who led the tournament in the first round was in good contention entering the final round at 2nd spot, but his lackluster performance of 2-under in the final round dropped him to 5th spot tied with fellow Americans Hunter Mahan and Jim Furyk.
Eventually, the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Championship playoff sudden-death showdown between Steve Stricker and Daniel Chopra took 4 playoff holes. It was very competitive, but Sweden’s Daniel Chopra was able to score a birdie on the 4th playoff hole to be crowned as the 2008 Mercedes-Benz Champion, and be the winner of the first golf tournament of the 2008 PGA Tour.
The next tournament for the 2008 PGA Tour will be the 2008 Sony Open in the Waialae Course One in Honolulu, Hawaii. Defending champion Paul Goydos hopes to make a repeat performance as champion, but maybe others will get luckier. Maybe even Tiger Woods might show up for the 2008 Sony Open on January 10-13, which will also offer a purse of $5.3 million.
