Last season, the
New England Patriots had an undefeated regular season with a perfect 16-0 record. The New England Patriots were also on their way to a perfect 19-0, except that they lost the last game of the season that counted the most - The Super Bowl. The New England Patriots lost Super Bowl XLII to the
New York Giants 17 to 14, and had to settle for an 18-1 record.
For the 2008-09 season, the New England Patriots are still the big favorites to win the 2009 AFC Championship and earn their fifth trip to the Super Bowl in eight years. After all, their perfect regular season record last season (despite losing Super Bowl XLII) still makes the New England Patriots one of best teams in the history of the NFL.
With a superstar roster that includes 2007 NFL MVP quarterback Tom Brady, wide receiver Randy Moss and running back Laurence Maroney, the New England Patriots are billed to have the best offensive line in the NFL. Of course, the defense of the New England Patriots is also one of the strongest in the NFL with the likes of Tedy Bruschi, Adalius Thomas, Mike Vrabel and James Sanders. There’s also Junior Seau on the New England’s defensive line, but has yet to sign his contract for the 2008 to 2009 NFL season.
Oddsmakers have already given an early line on which NFL team will win Super Bowl XLIII, and the odds have ranked the New England Patriots as the heavy favorites to win Super Bowl XLIII. Other strong contenders to win Super Bowl XLIII include the Dallas Cowboys, San Diego Chargers and Indianapolis Colts.
Oddsmakers think that it is a long shot for Super Bowl XLII champions New York Giants to win again in Super Bowl XLIII.
The New England Patriots may be the favorites to win Super Bowl XLIII, but they are off to a sluggish start during the NFL pre-season games, going 0-4 during the pre-season. Of course, the New England Patriots haven’t really used their big guns, sidelining star quarterback Tom Brady throughout the pre-season. Tom Brady is still recovering from an injury to his right foot. However, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick stated that Tom Brady will start in their season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs on September 7, 2008 at the Patriots’ home field at the Gilette Stadium.
New England Patriots reserve quarterback Matt Cassel has been taking over for Tom Brady in the pre-season, and hasn’t really been coming up with impressive numbers. If the New England Patriots hope to win Super Bowl XLIII, then they better have a healthy line up, especially a healthy Tom Brady. Because as we can see - without Tom Brady playing for the New England Patriots, they are very vulnerable.

New York Giants came to the University of Phoenix Stadium spoiling
New England Patriots unscathed record by beating the highly touted New England Patriots 17-14 in the 2008 Super Bowl XLII in Arizona.
New England Patriots –11 in the spread could not gain any momentum on their offense, both losing the Super Bowl XLII bid and the spread against the New York Giants.
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning, voted Super Bowl XLII’s Most Valuable Player, lofted a regal, floating 13-yard pass to New York Giants Plaxico Burress over New England Patriots cornerback Ellis Hobbs to put the Giants over the top with 35 seconds left.
New York Giants are nothing if not resilient. Because they were technically the visiting team, New York Giants won their 11th consecutive road game, including all four playoff wins.
New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning, completed 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns. While New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady completed 29 of 48 attempts for 266 yards to go with a touchdown.
The win was especially sweet for New York Giants defensive end Michael Strahan and wide receiver Amani Toomer, the only holdovers from the 34-7 strafing by the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XXXV. In addition, it was the third Super Bowl victory for one of the league’s most venerable franchises, to go with the Vince Lombardi Trophies won at the end of the 1986 and 1990 seasons.
New York Giants had a dream scenario for the opening drive, their first possession — which consumed nine minutes and 59 seconds and required 16 plays was it. New York Giants Quarterback Eli Manning, converted his first three third downs (a first-drive record for Super Bowls), but could not manage a fourth, throwing too far underneath to Steve Smith. Lawrence Tynes, who won the NFC title game with an overtime field goal, hit one from 32 yards out to give the Giants a 3-0 lead.
New England Patriots answered with a similarly muscular drive Laurence Maroney who began things with a 43-yard kickoff return finished it with a 1-yard run three seconds into the second quarter.
Coming into the game, the key match up appeared to be the New York Giants pass rush, which produced league-high 53 sacks in the regular season versus the New England Patriots offensive line. In Week 17 between the two teams, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady was sacked only once, and that was minus two starters.
On first down at the New York Giants’ own 20, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning flipped a pass to rookie tight end Kevin Boss. Kevin Boss caught it at the 39 and, when safety Rodney Harrison missed the tackle, it was good very for a 45-yard play. A few plays later, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning threaded a perfect 5-yard pass through traffic to David Tyree, and the New York Giants, almost inexplicably, led 10-7 with 11:05 remaining.
New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady moved them down the field, throwing underneath more often than not. Then, on the 12th play of the drive New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady hit New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss. The New York Giants elected to double Wes Welkerr inside and left cornerback Corey Webster alone with New England Patriots receiver Randy Moss. When Corey Webster tripped on his backpedal, Randy Moss was wide open for a 7-yard touchdown on third-and-goal.
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning however, engineered a terrific drive as time ran down. The signature play: Manning, ducking and spinning, somehow avoided a severe rush, and David Tyree managed to reel in a 33-yard catch — he initially pinned the ball on his helmet with one hand — giving New York the ball at the New England 24-yard line. With 35 seconds left, New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning hit Plaxico Burress with a gorgeous 25-yard touchdown pass, and the Pats’ perfect season vanished, horribly, into the twisted wreckage of a shocking loss.

The biggest game of the NFL season is under wraps, and the next American football event to look forward to will be the 2008 Pro Bowl, which will bring the top NFL all-stars into one big all-star football match. This time it’ll be the best of the AFC vs. the best of the NFC. Eli Manning of the New York Giants and Tom Brady of the New England Patriots are expected to take part in the 2008 Pro Bowl. The 2008 Pro Bowl kicks off on February 10, 2008 in Hawaii.

The United States takes on Mexico and England plays Switzerland on Wednesday as teams start getting ready for the European Championship in June. There are a total of 11 International Friendlies on Wednesday including Spain against France. It will be the first match between the two sides since France knocked Spain out of the 2006 World Cup. Spain is not thought of as a serious contender for Euro 2008 and will not be at full strength on Wednesday.
U.S. coach Bo Bradley has selected Fulham’s Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra, and Derby’s Eddie Lewis and Benny Feilhaber to play on Wednesday against Mexico in Houston. Goalkeeper Tim Howard (Everton), defender Oguchi Onyewu (Standard Liege), and midfielders Freddy Adu (Benfica) and Bobby Convey (Reading) will also make the trip to Houston. Landon Donovan is also expected to play. The U.S. played primarily with MLS players in their 2-0 win against Sweden last month.

Brazilian-born midfielder Antonio Naelson was picked by Mexico coach Hugo Sanchez and is expected to play on Wednesday. Naelson was born in Sao Paulo but has lived and played in Mexico since 1998. David Beckham will not be playing for England on Wednesday against Switzerland. New coach Fabio Capello left Beckham out of his first squad. Capello instead chose Chelsea’s Shaun Wright-Phillips and Blackburn’s David Bentley. It is possible Beckham could be recalled for friendlies next month. Capello picked from 14 of the 20 Premier League teams.
Gabriel Agbonlahor (Aston Villa) joins Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen up front along with Emile Heskey and Peter Crouch. Captain John Terry is injured and will not play. The goalkeepers are Scott Carson, David James and Chris Kirkland.

If you watched the game, or saw the replay of the highlights, then you know enough that the
New York Giants rallied in the last 2 minutes to score a TD to win
Super Bowl XLII and become champions of the NFL. In doing so, they ruin the perfect season of the
New England Patriots by taking that one win that mattered the most - the Super Bowl championship.
The New York Giants were underdogs to win, and even given a +11 point spread to help their advantage, but it seems that they didn’t need it after they beat the New England Patriots straight up 17-14. The obvious upset makes the New York Giants winners against the spread, and Giants QB Eli Manning gets the Super Bowl XLII MVP award for his awesome performance in leading the Giants to victory.
Now while the New England Patriots may have lost the Super Bowl, they may have won in some other betting aspects of Super Bowl XLII. Laurence Maroney declared for the 2006 NFL Draft after the completion of his junior season and was selected in the first round with the 21st overall pick by the
New England Patriots. He was the second running back selected behind Reggie Bush. While splitting time with fellow running back Corey Dillon in 2006, Maroney was part of what coach Bill Belichick called the best running back corps he had ever coached. After Corey Dillon was released, Maroney became the starting running back for the Patriots.
In Week 4, Maroney earned 125 yards and 2 TDs (of 11 and 25 yards) on 15 carries, a performance that earned him both FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Week and Diet Pepsi Rookie NFL Player of the Week honors. In Week 7, he was voted AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after a 74-yard kickoff return, while in Week 8 he had a 77-yard kickoff return (the two longest non-TD returns of the season outside of Antonio Cromartie’s 91-yard kickoff return against the Oakland Raiders). Moreover, those two returns gave Maroney the longest kickoff return average among all NFL players.
In Week 11, Maroney had 82 yards rushing, and four receptions for 34 yards, including a 19-yard reception that became his first receiving touchdown.
